Rip Current Heroes

Professor Rob Brander’s research and public beach safety education efforts have been profiled in the documentary Rip Current Heroes. Several years in the making, Rip Current Heroes, a one-hour television program produced by Jason Markland in partnership with National Geographic premiered on the National Geographic Channel in Australia in December 2017 and has been shown as a feature on Qantas and JetStar in-flight entertainment.

 Rip Current Rescue

Rip Current Rescue is America’s first documentary special on rip current safety. Produced by Jason Markland in partnership with the United States Lifesaving Association, it takes audiences to the frontlines of U.S. beach safety - up close with those dedicated to keeping the public safe from these deadly currents.

Filmed across popular beaches in California, The Gulf Coast, North Carolina and New England, it features dramatic stories of survival captured on camera. It also reveals why the Great Lakes are a hotspot for rip current drownings, despite being hundreds of miles from an ocean.

Compelling stories combined with the science of Professor Rob Brander and other coastal scientists help the viewing public understand rip currents, know how to spot them, and what to do if they ever find themselves caught in a rip.
